An anxiety attack can be terrifying and it's often hard for anyone to understand unless they have been through it themselves.
Often an attack can happen without warning or for no reason which can be scary and frustrating at the same time.
Here are 5 steps that have helped me through an attack and I hope it will help you as well.
Avoid places that will create unnecessary anxiety. This is especially important in the beginning stage when you are feeling uncertain and nervous. Prevention is better than cure, HOWEVER avoiding everything is not the answer. Being in nature is a great way to help bring calmness into your life
Stop and breath deeply.....sounds simple but anxiety can actually shorten and speed up the breathing due to the panic that arrises as you begin to realise what's happening. Deep breathing will help slow the heart rate and adrenaline.
Allow it to run it's course. This is the hardest one because you have to "let go" and let it happen no matter how scary or embarrassing it may feel to you (......ps my anxiety is uncontrollable choking, which is very frightening and awkward so I completely understand this is a hard one). The more you try fight it, the worst it will become so just try let it go.
Have a phrase or mantra that you can repeat in your head to help break the mental loop of fear that starts once you feel the anxiety. No, it won't stop it but it is so important to break unhealthy thought patterns that run on repeat during an attack.....this is also important for any other time in your day especially when your mind starts to run wild.
Be around people who understand and support you. Tell them what type of anxiety you have and that you are unsure when it will happen. Being honest and open relieves alot of stress and fear inside and is also a great prevention tool.
You WILL be ok and you WILL come out stronger I promise xx
